 “ Love stumbled into, love thwarted,

 love held sorrowfully in the heart.“

“Brokeback Mountain" is definitely not a western. It is quite the period piece that some would like to imagine. Well, it is a romance, a heartbreaking story of two Wyoming ranch hands,  Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist. The two macho guys falls in love by accident. In other words, Brokeback Mountain decribes gay twist.

The theme is set in the 1960s. At that time, homosexuality was forbidden so their love was rocky. There is a sudden spark between two macho guys, or two gay men,  while they are thrown together on a sheepherding job on Brokeback Mountain.

I’m personally not for against homosexuality although I’m straight. In the movie, I simply see the love and passion between human beings, the natural spirit of people. The author Ann Prolux writes it this way:

"They never talked about sex, let it happen, at first only in the tent at night, then in full daylight with the hot sun striking down, and at evening in the fire glow, quick, rough, laughing and snorting, no lack of noises, but saying not a goddamn word except once Ennis said, 'I'm not no queer,' and Jack jumped in with 'Me neither.' " 

I can tell the passion and desire from Jack's eyes in the movie. I also can feel how much and deep his love is, which surprises me a lot because I thought I wouldn't be able to understand or accept this. Anyway, love is love no matter what one’s sex is or who one loves, isn't it?

The external and internal forces of love drive Jack and Ennis from desire to denial. In order to keep their jobs, the two men must keep their secret affair deep inside their hearts. Over the 20 years, no matter how far they are apart from each other and how their lives are changed by marriage and children, the denial of their bond only make it stronger. However, they can never find the happiness they used to share together on Brokeback Mountain again in the real world.

 When most people were repulsed by the notion of homosexuality, the same-sex passion was no more simplisitic version of love. How said it is to see inside the hearts of two beloved ones are trapped by in articulateness!

Well...Ultimately, Love is a force of nature!

 

p.s. Jack Twist這個名字，我想...應該是個雙關語! twist 這個單字有"轉折"和意外的進展"的涵意 。
